Caring for destination
Main area of focus in Caring for the Destination:
Supporting the indigenous community of the Koguis
Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:
The Koguis is one of the descendants of the ancient Tayrona tribe, which live in the Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta. Those indigenous tribes have suffered a lot in the last 20 years, particularly because of the violent conflicts between the paramilitary and the guerrillas in these areas. For a few years, the Colombian state has got back the control over these zones and it has become possible to explore them for tourist objectives. And the indigenous tribes finally can participate in the decision- making by their community council and they have been supported by several NGOs.
At the moment, one Kogui family lives in Pueblito, they are the ambassadors for the rest of their community, whose members visit Pueblito on occasion. Tourists may contribute by buying the special handicrafts they offer at a very reasonable price.
